Four Checks Before You Adjust Nutrients

  1. Photograph the whole plant and one affected leaf. Include healthy growth for comparison, then note whether symptoms began on old lower leaves, new upper leaves, leaf edges, or the entire plant.
  2. Confirm water movement and aeration. Look for an air-stone bubble pattern, flowing return line, wet wick, or working pump. In deep-water culture, a silent air pump or kinked airline is an immediate equipment clue.
  3. Measure the reservoir before changing it. Record pH, EC or TDS, solution temperature, water level, and the time tested. Rinse probes with clean water and retest any surprising reading.
  4. Inspect roots under neutral light. Healthy roots are generally firm and pale, although nutrients may stain them. Slime, easy-to-strip tissue, sour odor, or a warm stagnant reservoir points toward root-zone trouble.
