The bible tells us to set our affections on things above, and not on the things of the earth beneath. Those who follow Christ set their affections on things above. They will not be overtaken by the things of the earth beneath. The things of the earth consists of the lusts of the flesh, while the things above consists of spiritual things. Those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with it's affections and lusts, according to the scripture.
Jesus tells us in his word that we must take up our cross daily and deny ourselves. This verse is telling us to put to death the deeds of the flesh. The deeds of the flesh include adultery, fornication, wrath, strife, envy, murders, emulations, etc. Those who are Christ's will not be overtaken with such things, according to the bible. Those who are Christ's have a new nature, a spiritual nature. Therefore, their affections are set on things above, spiritual things.
There are many today who cannot cease from sin. They continue in the lusts of the flesh. Without the spirit of God, no man can cease from sin. The bible tells us, through the spirit, we mortify the deeds of the body. If the spirit dwells in us, the body is dead because of sin, while the spirit is life because of righteousness. Those who are alive in the spirit are dead to the flesh with it's affections and lusts. Their affections are now set on things above, spiritual things. No man can cease from sin without the spirit of God dwelling within them. The bible tells us as many as receive the spirit of God receive the power to become the sons of God. The spirit gives us a new nature with new affections.
We who are dead to sin can no longer live therein. When one is born of the spirit of God, they become dead in the flesh. The bible tells us sin dwells in our flesh. Those who walk after the flesh are still alive in the flesh. They have yet to receive the spirit of God. Those who remain in the flesh have their affections set on the things of the earth, the lusts of the flesh.
We, as Christians, must keep our hearts and minds upon Christ Jesus, and not be overtaken with surfeiting and drunkenness. The bible tells us no drunkard has any inheritance in the kingdom of God. A tree is know by his fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth corrupt fruit, while a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit. Those who have their affections set upon the things of the earth remain unsaved in the flesh. They who are in the flesh cannot please God. Without faith, it is impossible to please him. Let us remain in the faith in Jesus Christ, and not be overtaken with the lusts of the flesh. Let us set our affections on things above, and not on the things of the earth. God Bless.
